Communication is an essential part of life and for children on the autism spectrum and communicating can be challenging. Professionals such as speech language pathologists and other educators can assist you in meeting the communication goals you set for your child. What is an expressive language delay? An expressive language delay is when language skills lag behind other children the same age by at least one year or a failure to reach typical milestones for language development.

There may also be an inability to follow simple directions. The child may have slow or hard to understand speech after the age of 3. Typically the child understands language better than he or she is able to communicate.
